Formentera has traditionally been a place always remaining in a standstill (when talking about music). And even if it is true that traditional music remains still unalterable and completely unaware of passing years, it is also evident that somethinghas changed.
Young people living in Formentera in the 60’s and 70’s took interest in the new type of music which the hippies used to bring with. From those years sprang local music bands like Zenith and others, which can be considered as parents of the new Formentera’s music, from which the current music is still inheriting style.
Nowadays, the hippies that have survived that time and those who are not hippies but still keep the hippies’ spirit, keep that music alive. Formentera has several bands of this kind. There are three of them that especially stand out: Formentera Guitars, Fourmenterrors and Blues Connotation.
The first one is composed of several members of a well-known workshop-school for learning how to manufacture a guitar. Their sound and compositions’ quality is guaranteed, because who knows better than a guitar manufacturer how to make the most of it?
The Fourmenterrors are a mythical band in Formentera, composed of hippies of the first generation. Their music makes us travel back in time until the age in which the blues-rock was the everyday music, in other words, authentic sound of the seventies.
If you are one of those who really enjoy just with jam sessions of the purest jazz, then you cannot miss the performances that Blues Connotation offers us every Saturday at the Sant Francesc Xavier place. There you will find music of an unquestionable quality brought out by the members of this band, citizens of several nationalities: English, German and a local musician. It is important to highlight that in summer, these bands use to give concerts together with well-known musicians from all over the world who come to these paradise-island to spend their holidays.
From those bands composed of local musicians, there are two that stand out: Aires Formenterencs and Spioks. From Aires Formenterencs you will enjoy a bright mixing of the most traditional sound of Formentera and an interesting range of new sounds.
They are, undoubtedly, the most famous local band (both inside and outside the island, because they usually receive invitations to go and give concerts in Ibiza, Mallorca or even in the Peninsula).
Trep-X makes a musica inspired by calm places of the island with special sounds and lived moments. Songs the dusk in several musical styles: Brazilian, Cuban, flamenco-jazz and sounds of folk intruments.
Spioks is the young band par excellence. In every concert, they manage to win the public’s admiration. Their music: a pop-rock in terms of the latests tendencies, always talking about Catalan music.
There are also some other local bands which are now coming out and offer concerts as part of the programme of the fiestas celebrated in Formentera. (See fiestas section.)
