When we talk about Formentera and link it with the subject sports, it is absolutely essential to talk about summer. A lot of different sports can be done both in summer and winter; but, undoubtely, water sports play an important role among others.
In the summer season, here you can do almost all the sports that take place in the open sea. There is plenty of yatch clubs and equipment-hire businesses situated just near the beach that offer jet ski, surfboards, pedal boats, cataramans, cayacs, canoes, diving equipments and also the possibility of doing waterskiing, without forgetting the incredible sensation of freedom you can experience traveling 30 meters high with a parachute attached to a motorboat that takes you for a walk over the best beaches of Formentera, from which you will have an incredible bird’s-eye view.
In Formentera or, better said, at its beaches, you will also have the opportunity to do sailing, no matter what level you have. Everybody can go sailing, from the most professional until those who want to learn and therefore need an instructor exclusively for them. You can also do oaring and paddling, swimming, of course, and, if what you are looking for are strong emotions, you can try out the speed of a jet ski. You must bear in mind that it is necessary for you to have a special licence if you want to drive this type of vehicle.
On the other hand, you can enjoy those sport activities you will do in closed premises. The island is provided with various public centres fitted out for doing sport. On the outskirts of the urban centre of San Francisco you will find the municipal football field where every Sunday during winter season different categories play the foorball league between Ibiza and Formentera. Also in San Francisco you have at your disposal Formentera’s sports centre, where you can play basketball, five-a-side soccer, handball, athletics and track sports.
If we take into account that Formentera scarcely has 82 square km, then, we will realize how wonderful are its beaches, paths, routes and landscapes, which always welcome those tourists which love open air sports and any other visitor who wants to enjoy the sun, the beaches and the quiet, relaxed environment.
Formentera is definitely a paradise for anyone who is fond of the sea and of water sports. Nevertheless, we cannot give less importance to land sports: bicycle, mountain bike with which you can just have a walk or really cycle over perfectly signposted routes, or racing cars, this last sport just practiced by professionals, since it is considered to be dangerous. In Formentera you will also find a little track for motocross and other specialities which envolve two wheels vehicles.
